YouTube and brand mentions beat backlinks for AI visibility: the data

7 min read · updated 2026-06-03

If you had to pick one off-site investment to improve how often AI engines cite you, the data has an unambiguous answer: YouTube. In Ahrefs' analysis, YouTube mentions had the highest correlation (0.737) with AI brand visibility of every factor studied — including conventional SEO metrics like backlinks, Domain Rating, and traffic. This held for both Google-owned and OpenAI products.

That's a genuinely surprising result. We've spent two decades treating backlinks as the dominant off-site signal. For AI search, brand presence — and YouTube specifically — appears to matter more. The likely reason: models are trained and grounded on a web where being mentioned, discussed, and demonstrated on video is a strong proxy for being a real, established brand worth citing.

Why brand mentions outrank links here

  • 67% of ChatGPT's top citations come from sources marketers can't directly influence — Wikipedia, homepages, app stores, reviews. Brand strength is what gets you into that set, not a link-building campaign.
  • Models reward recognisability. A brand mentioned across YouTube, forums, and editorial coverage looks safer to cite than an unknown domain with good on-page SEO.
  • Video is uniquely citable: transcripts, titles, and descriptions give models clean, attributable text tied to your brand name.
Don't over-invest in schema

The same research found schema markup had zero meaningful impact on AI citations. Keep it for Google rich results, but if you're choosing where to spend, off-site brand presence beats another round of structured-data work for AI visibility.

A practical off-site playbook

  1. Start a YouTube channel for your brand and actually link it from your homepage — demos, explainers, comparisons. Even a small channel establishes the signal.
  2. Get mentioned, not just linked. Podcast appearances, roundups, and “best X” listicles that name you all build the brand-mention footprint models pick up on.
  3. Make your brand name unambiguous and consistent across profiles so models can resolve mentions to you.
  4. Keep your homepage surfacing your off-site presence (YouTube, social profiles) — it's a cheap proxy that you're an established brand.

Measure where you stand

Our free AI citation & brand mention checker scans your homepage for exactly these off-site signals — starting with whether you even link a YouTube channel — and, where available, asks a model whether it would cite you for your core queries. It's the fastest way to see which signals you're missing.
