Frequently asked questions
What is Domain Rating (DR)?
Domain Rating is Ahrefs' 0–100 score for the strength of a website's backlink profile relative to every other site in their database. The scale is logarithmic, so moving from 70 to 71 is far harder than moving from 20 to 21. It reflects link authority — not traffic, content quality, or whether a specific page will rank.
Is this Domain Rating checker really free?
Yes. It uses Ahrefs' free public Domain Rating endpoint, which needs no API key and no sign-in. Type a domain and you get the current DR. Use of the data is governed by Ahrefs' Domain Rating License, and we attribute the figure to Ahrefs as required.
What's a good Domain Rating?
It depends on your niche, but as a rough guide: under 10 is a new or low-authority site, 25–50 is a developing-to-moderate profile, 50–70 is strong, and 70+ is elite territory occupied by major brands. Because DR is relative and logarithmic, compare against the sites you actually compete with rather than chasing an absolute number.
How do I improve my Domain Rating?
DR rises when you earn links from other strong, relevant domains — through genuinely useful content, digital PR, and being cited as a source. Low-quality or spammy links do little and can hurt. There's no shortcut: it's a slow-moving reflection of how the rest of the web links to you.
Does Domain Rating affect Google rankings?
DR is a third-party metric from Ahrefs, not a Google ranking factor. Google doesn't use it. But backlinks — which DR summarizes — are a real ranking signal, so DR is a useful proxy for the link-authority side of SEO when comparing competitors.
What's the difference between DR and DA (Domain Authority)?
They're competing metrics from different companies measuring roughly the same thing. Domain Rating (DR) is Ahrefs' 0–100 backlink-strength score; Domain Authority (DA) is Moz's equivalent, built on Moz's own link index and calibrated to predict ranking likelihood. The numbers aren't interchangeable — a DR 40 site might be DA 30 or DA 50 — so pick one metric and compare consistently within it. This tool reports Ahrefs DR.
